Part of Red Bull’s marketing campaign for the 2013 Red Bull Soap Box Derby, led agency TCOB to ask us to create an animated billboard in Central. The concept was to build a large wooden work shed with someone supposedly inside constructing a crazy invention for the race.

In order to breathe life into the shed, give it character and grab people’s attention, we used a combination of motors, servos, actuators, control circuitry, shadow play and ridiculous ideas, we animated a man called ‘Bert’ into being very active inside his shed, building his machine for the Soapbox event. With hammering, sawing, banging and welding flashes, the public would stop and enjoy the show. It ran for 3 minutes with 5 minute interludes, all the while a sneaky little cat in the dustbin would pop up to see what was going on.
